While rummaging through a bin of donated books in a Salvation Army Thrift Store, the author comes across an odd and long-out-of-print little manual titled The Schlossberg Book of World Records, published by the Schlossberg-Farlag Yiddish Publishing House in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1957. It consisted of supposedly true biographical vignettes of Schlossberg record holders, including a Hindu yogi who can lift heavy stones with his penis, a man who was married sixty-one times, a magician who spent forty days underground, a blindfolded female sharpshooter, a collector of the memorabilia of a Jewish woman wrestler, and a ventriloquist’s dummy who sings Italian opera arias. All of them are little people with very big dreams.
